About Neurological Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

When the central nervous system is damaged, messages from the brain may not reach corresponding parts of the body. This can lead to weakness, loss of movement or sensation, uncoordinated movements, spasms, or tremor. This could affect the whole body or may affect one area but in most cases will lead to changes in a persons function or participation. This is where Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy can find ways to get you back to what you previously enjoyed.

Neurological physiotherapy is the rehabilitation of people with neurological conditions or injury.

Neurological physiotherapists aim to reboot the brain by creating new neural pathways (known as neuroplasticity) using repetitive movement and exercises.

A neurological physiotherapist will work with you to manage your symptoms and optimise your function. the physiotherapy each person receives will be collaborative dependant on your goals but may includes stretching, strengthening, task specific practice, hydrotherapy and the use of technology or splints. Goals you may want to work on could be:

-To improve balance and reduce falls

-To improve your walking

-To improve your coordination for activities like cooking

-To strengthen muscles to help with tasks such as getting out of bed or up and down stairs.
