The Impact Of A Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries occur when an individual suffers damage or trauma to the spine, often caused by an accident, fall or sports injury. Diseases such as Polio, Spina Bifida or Transverse Myelitis can also cause spinal cord injury.

Because the spinal cord is responsible for sending messages from the brain all over the body, the symptoms of a spinal cord can vary greatly depending on the injury and its location.

Common symptoms of a spinal cord injury may include:

• Muscle weakness
• Pain
• Sensory disturbance
• Stiffness (spasticity) or spasm
• Reduced bladder and bowel sensation or control

This can lead to a loss of functional movement and reduced mobility. Due to the variety of symptoms and different levels of spinal cord injuries, treatments should always be tailored to the individual for the best results.
