Spasticity is a symptom of several medical conditions. At VIM Health, we specialise in the treatment of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, including those that can cause spasticity.

Our multi-disciplinary team use hands-on therapies and cutting-edge rehabilitation technologies to reach recovery goals and improve health.

What Is Spasticity?

Spasticity is a common neurological symptom associated with a wide range of conditions. It can occur alongside other symptoms such as spasm (involuntary movements) or clonus (a series of fast contractions). Other common symptoms seen in people with spasticity might be pain, discomfort, weakness, or difficulties with day-to-day tasks such as cutting fingernails or toileting.

Our bodies are constantly sending and receiving messages to our limbs via our spinal cord. In conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, SCI or MS these signals can be disrupted. Spasticity is due to a deregulation between the spinal cord and limbs causing an increase in muscle activity. It is often exacerbated in response to peripheral stimulation such as infection, constipation or damage to the skin such as pressure sore.

Spasticity Management Service

As neurological and musculoskeletal healthcare specialists, VIM Health provides solutions to treat the range of conditions and injuries that have caused damage to the central nervous systems.

These might include cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, a stroke or an acquired brain injury.

Following a comprehensive assessment, we will provide a tailored programme aimed to reduce spasticity, improve function and enhance the quality of life.

Alongside spasticity management, a rehabilitation programme will include other services, such as Neurological Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, Orthotics service, exercise programmes and rehabilitation technology.
