If an individual experiences trauma or damage to the spine, for example, due to an accident or sports injury, this can cause a spinal cord injury. Some medical conditions, including Polio, Spina Bifida, Transverse Myelitis or a tumour can also result in a spinal cord injury.

Depending on the degree of injury and the area of damage, spinal cord injuries can be life-altering. Common symptoms include loss of functional movement, reduced mobility, muscle weakness and even paralysis.

VIM Health specialises in providing neurological and Musculoskeletal healthcare (MSK) services, including a spinal cord injury service.

Spinal Cord Rehab

At VIM Health, we provide rapid access to a range of rehabilitation therapies and treatments, including the use of state-of-the-art technology.

Our multi-disciplinary team of highly experienced physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and therapy assistants provide evidence-based treatments tailored to the needs and recovery goals of each individual.

Each patient receives access to VIM health and VIM Gym offering everything from intensive daily rehabilitation to regular group exercise classes.

To assist in a patient’s recovery following a spinal cord injury or illness, we use a variety of cutting-edge rehabilitation technology, such as Lyra, Balo, FES bike, FES Bioness, Armedeo, Pablo, Tymo, and Tyrostation.

The treatments often offered as part of our spinal cord injury rehab service include:

  • Gait Analysis and Robotic Gait Training with LYRA
  • Upper Limb Rehabilitation
  • Specialist Neurological Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Lower Limb Rehabilitation
  • Rehabilitation Technology including Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
  • Pain Management Service

Our spinal cord rehab service is often split into two services; the Intensive Rehabilitation Programme and the Discharge Continuity Programme.

Intensive Rehabilitation Programme

Adjusting to the changes that come with a spinal cord injury can be incredibly challenging. Thankfully, Neuroplasticity allows the brain, spinal cord and body to reconnect and find new ways to help the body function.

Our Intensive Rehabilitation Programme aims to enhance the process of neuroplasticity through 4 hours of daily rehabilitation, which includes high repetition task-specific training.

Discharge Continuity Programme

Following the intensive rehabilitation programme, VIM Health provides a continuity programme designed to provide ongoing rehabilitation as the individual settles back into their home environment.

Our discharge programme is tailored to your needs and enhances the often-daunting transition back into the home.
