What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy is an umbrella term for damage to the immature and developing brain that can affect movement, muscle tone and muscle strength. Damage to the brain can occur whilst the baby remains in utero or at any time up until the age of two years old. As a result of this, the symptoms and function of each child or adult can vary significantly.

In many cases, the exact cause of cerebral palsy is not clear. But common causes of the condition include:

  • Bleeding to the brain or lack of oxygen to the brain of an unborn baby
  • Infection caught by the mother during pregnancy
  • Oxygen supply to the brain getting temporarily cut off during birth
  • Meningitis as a baby
  • A serious head injury as a baby

Cerebral Palsy affects around 1 in 400 children in the UK. There is currently no cure, however, there is a wide range of treatments that enable people living with cerebral palsy to be as active and independent as possible.

Challenges Faced

Just as the cause of cerebral palsy varies greatly, so do the symptoms. Some people may only have minor symptoms that are easily manageable. Whereas others may have life-altering symptoms leaving them severely disabled.

Common symptoms of cerebral palsy include:

  • Stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes (causing jerky or clumsy movements
  • Weak arms and legs
  • Lack of balance and muscle coordination
  • Difficulties walking, such as walking on tiptoes or with a crouched gait
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills
  • Difficulty with speaking, eating and swallowing
  • Learning difficulties

Although cerebral palsy is a non-progressive disorder which means the symptoms of each person should not change. We know that in people with CP the added energy expenditure and strains on the body over a person’s lifetime may lead to new issues in adulthood.
