What Is Foot Drop?

Foot drop (also known as drop foot) is a condition that occurs when the front part of the foot cannot be lifted usually due to weakness in the muscles that control this.

It can affect one or both feet and can impact the way an individual walks. Sometimes individuals can adapt to this by lifting their knees higher than usual to avoid dragging the front of their foot and toes along the floor.

However, this is not always possible if there is weakness higher up the leg for example following a stroke. When this occurs foot drop can lead to tripping and falling which in turn can reduce confidence to walk outside.

What Causes Foot Drop?

Injury to the common peroneal nerve, slipped disc or hip/knee replacement surgery can lead to foot drop.

Medical conditions or diseases such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Muscular Dystrophy, Polio, Cerebral Palsy, Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke and Parkinson’s Disease can all result in foot drop.
