Functional neurological disorder (FND) can present in various ways, including weakness, sensory loss, tremors, non-epileptic seizures, changes to speech, walking difficulties or fatigue. It results from a problem how the brain functions, often described as (software issue) rather than due to structural damage to the brain such as in a stroke (Hardware issue).
FND can often co-exist with other health conditions which include:
It is also possible to have functional neurological symptoms, without it being a disorder, these are treated in similar ways to FND. Every person with FND/functional symptoms will present in a different way and their symptoms can fluctuate over time but they are treatable.
While there is no one-size-fits-all cure for FND, research supports a rehabilitation-based approach, focusing on retraining the brain and body connection. It is important to fully understand your diagnosis of FND and have had this explained to you by a neurologist to get the most out of your FND rehabilitation.
Our neuro-specialist physiotherapists work with you to understand how symptoms manifest and use specific techniques to help retrain movement and rebuild confidence. At Vim Health, we prioritise education and collaboration to help you understand your condition and take an active role in your recovery. We specialise in treating people with motor difficulties associated with FND such as weakness, walking difficulties or sensory disturbance. This is often in conjunction with an occupational therapist:
We incorporate cutting-edge equipment to support motor re-learning, balance, and coordination:
Gait training with LiteGait® and treadmill
Balance and proprioception devices
Living with FND can be overwhelming, but you’re not alone. At Vim Health, we provide a safe, supportive space where you can better understand your condition and regain confidence in movement. If you or someone you support is affected by Functional Neurological Disorder, get in touch to discuss how we can help or book an assessment to begin a personalised rehab journey.
