What is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?

Functional neurological disorder (FND) can present in various ways, including weakness, sensory loss, tremors, non-epileptic seizures, changes to speech, walking difficulties or fatigue. It results from a problem how the brain functions, often described as (software issue) rather than due to structural damage to the brain such as in a stroke (Hardware issue).

FND can often co-exist with other health conditions which include:

    1. Other neurological conditions
    2. Chronic pain (including fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome)
    3. Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.
    4. Mental health conditions (including anxiety disorders and trauma)
    5. Neurodevelopmental conditions

It is also possible to have functional neurological symptoms, without it being a disorder, these are treated in similar ways to FND. Every person with FND/functional symptoms will present in a different way and their symptoms can fluctuate over time but they are treatable.

Treatment for FND

While there is no one-size-fits-all cure for FND, research supports a rehabilitation-based approach, focusing on retraining the brain and body connection. It is important to fully understand your diagnosis of FND and have had this explained to you by a neurologist to get the most out of your FND rehabilitation.

We specialise in treating people with motor difficulties associated with FND such as weakness, walking difficulties or sensory disturbance. This is often in conjunction with an occupational therapist:
