What Is Motor Neurone Disease?

MND is an uncommon yet rapidly progressing disease that attacks the nerves (motor neurones) that control the muscles. This neurological disease affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time.

There are different forms of motor neurone disease and diagnosis can often be challenging in the early stages, however, classic symptoms of MND are: progressive weakness in the arms, legs, trunk or bulbar region (speech and swallow).

Unfortunately, there is no cure for MND and symptoms can get worse over time. However, there are many treatments that can help reduce the impact that these symptoms have on an individual’s life to allow you to live well in the presence of MND.

Challenges Faced

The symptoms of MND vary from person to person. Some of the symptoms can start subtly, meaning they are not obvious at first. Common motor neurone disease symptoms include:

  • Muscle weakness and loss of muscle mass (wasting), which causes a weak grip, mobility issues and difficulty moving arms and legs
  • Muscle stiffness, cramps and twitches
  • Slurred speech
  • Swallowing and saliva difficulties
  • Weight loss
  • Emotional liability, which can cause inappropriate emotional responses (such as difficulty stopping yourself from laughing in inappropriate situations).

These symptoms can significantly impact the day-to-day life of an individual with motor neurone disease. As the symptoms worsen, muscle wasting can lead to severe paralysis and breathing difficulties.

Thankfully, specialist treatments can reduce the symptoms and improve the quality of life.
