What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is an incurable and progressive neurological condition caused by degeneration of the central nervous system due to a loss of nerve cells in the brain. In the UK alone, there are more than 120,000 with Parkinson’s, a disease that is more common in those aged 50 and over.

The most common symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease include:

  • Involuntary shaking (tremors) in various parts of the body including hands, arms, legs, jaw or head
  • Slow movements
  • Stiff and inflexible muscles
  • Impaired balance (which can increase the risk of falls.

Other symptoms include:

  • Depression, anxiety and mood changes
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of smell
  • Memory problems

The Challenges Faced

These symptoms can gradually worsen over time until they become life-altering and pose several challenges. An individual with Parkinson’s Disease may struggle with basic day-to-day tasks including bathing, dressing, cooking, eating, sleeping, walking and driving.

This can lead to a loss of independence, or impact relationships with friends and family and may cause an individual’s mental health to suffer.
