What Is Polio?

Polio is an infectious viral disease that was once very common in the UK until a successful vaccination programme completely eradicated the virus in all but two countries.

People of any age contracted the virus, although many had no symptoms or had flu-like symptoms. However, in some cases, polio was life-altering as it attacked the nervous system and weakened the muscles, causing paralysis within hours or days.

If the paralysis caused by polio affected the muscles used for breathing, the disease had the potential to be life-threatening.

Challenges Faced

Unfortunately, a polio survivor can develop post-polio syndrome, which is a non-contagious disease that strikes between 15 and 40 years after originally contracting the disease.

Some polio survivors experience minor symptoms, whereas others experience a more severe case of PPS and develop weakened muscles.

The common symptoms of post-polio syndrome include:

  • Muscle weakness, which progresses slowly and can affect mobility
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep apnoea (where the breathing stops and starts during sleep)

Thankfully, there are effective treatments available to ease the symptoms of PPS.
