What is a Vestibular Disorder?

A vestibular disorder is a condition that affects the vestibular system, which is a complex sensory system located within the inner ear. This system maintains balance, orientation, and eye movement control. It works with the visual and proprioceptive systems to help us maintain stability and a sense of where our body is in space.

When the vestibular system is disrupted or damaged, it can lead to various vestibular disorders. These disorders can significantly impact a person’s daily life, causing symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo (a sensation of spinning or whirling), imbalance, and difficulty with coordination and spatial awareness.

Common Vestibular Disorders:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular Neuritis, Meniere’s Disease, Labyrinthitis
  • Vestibular Migraine, Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS)
  • Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
  • Perilymphatic Fistula (PLF).
  • Possible neurological causes include Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Traumatic brain injury, and Persistent concussion symptoms.

How Can VIM Health Help?

Through physiotherapy rehabilitation, we aim to understand the root cause and reduce the primary symptoms of vestibular disorders. Our initial assessment will consider secondary symptoms such as reduced mobility, imbalance or unsteadiness, gaze instability and vertigo. Once you have been assessed by one of our highly-skilled therapists will create a bespoke rehabilitation program with customised exercises, some of which may include gaze stabilisation, balance training, or habituation exercises to be completed independently and regularly over a period of time.

Dizziness and imbalance can have a huge impact on day-to-day life, work, and your confidence to go out. Our therapists will set functional goals with you to ensure we work together to optimise your independence and return to activities you previously enjoyed.

As well as using innovative treatments and therapies, which are enhanced by technology for traditional vestibular rehabilitation, we also offer:

– Falls and balance therapy to improve function and confidence

– Mindfulness and relaxation

– Holistic management of migraine, including diet, sleep and exercise.

– Supervised gym classes

In discussion with you during your consultation, the involvement of other team members such as hearing therapists, audiologists or cognitive behavioural therapists may be recommended.
