What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a common condition that affects people of all ages but is more common in the elderly. It is also more common in women. There are two main types of arthritis; Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid.

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that protects the ends of the bones breaks down. This causes swelling, pain, and reduced joint movement and may cause the development of bony growths.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, affecting nearly 9 million people in the UK. It most commonly affects the hands, spine, knees, and hips.

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system targets affected joints leading to swelling and pain. It affects more than 400,000 people in the UK and usually starts between the ages of 40 and 50.

Rheumatoid arthritis can change the shape of the joint and may even cause the bone and cartilage to break down.

Challenges Faced

Arthritis and joint pain, particularly Rheumatoid arthritis can, unfortunately, be life-altering. In some cases, it can become challenging to complete basic tasks, such as cooking and dressing, due to the impact arthritis has on the joints, especially the hands.

Arthritis of the knees and hips can also make walking and driving painful and difficult. Unfortunately, there is no cure for arthritis. However, our arthritis rehabilitation programme can help ease the pain and increase the use of the areas affected by arthritis.
