Lower Limb Rehabilitation: Unlocking Movement and Independence

Lower limb rehabilitation can be a crucial part of recovery for anyone who has experienced a neurological injury or condition affecting their ability to walk. Whether the cause is a stroke, spinal cord injury (SCI), multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy (CP), or another neurological diagnosis, effective rehab can improve mobility, confidence, and quality of life.

At Vim Health, we specialise in supporting people ‘s walking rehabilitation goals– through a combination of advanced technology, hands-on physiotherapy, and truly personalised care. This article explores how our approach helps people achieve real progress.

Why Lower Limb Rehabilitation Matters

Damage to the brain or spinal cord can affect the way signals travel between the body and brain, resulting in muscle weakness, poor coordination, reduced balance, or complete loss of movement in the lower limbs. For many people, this means difficulty walking or standing – or not being able to do so at all.

Rehab for the lower limbs focuses on restoring function in the hips, knees, ankles, and feet — with a strong emphasis on mobility and independence. With the right support and repetition, the nervous system can begin to rewire itself (neuroplasticity), helping people regain some or all of their ability to move.

Our programmes are designed to suit both early recovery and more advanced rehab needs, ensuring the right pace and intensity for each individual.

Conditions We Support

Our approach is suitable for individuals with:

  • Stroke – improving walking, balance, and gait pattern.
  • Spinal cord injury (SCI) – from partial to complete injuries.
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) – addressing fatigue, spasticity, and reduced coordination.
  • Cerebral palsy (CP) – supporting both children and adults to improve walking ability.
  • Other neurological or orthopaedic conditions affecting mobility.

Advanced Equipment to Lower Limb Rehabilitation

We use cutting-edge devices to create a safe, motivating, and measurable way to improve function and encourage repetition. These include:

The Lyra – Robotic Gait Trainer

The Lyra helps clients retrain their walking pattern using a robotic exoskeleton and treadmill. It provides body-weight support and guides each leg through a normal walking cycle — allowing for hundreds of steps per session, even for people with significant weakness or no active movement.

See more about our robotic gait training technology.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bike

Our FES cycling machine uses small electrical impulses to stimulate the muscles in your legs to pedal a stationary bike. This is particularly helpful for people with limited voluntary control. It helps maintain muscle mass, improve blood flow, and promote brain-muscle connection.

Discover more about Functional Electrical Stimulation.

LiteGait and Treadmill Training

The LiteGait is a harness and body-weight support system that helps clients practise walking over a treadmill without the fear of falling. It’s especially beneficial during early rehab or after injury, as it allows for safe practice with physiotherapist support. This can be integrated into more focused rehab blocks for best results.
