What Is An Acquired Brain Injury?

An acquired brain injury is damage to the brain that happens after birth. It can be caused by sudden onset or insidious onset.

Causes of sudden onset brain injuries include but are not limited to trauma, infection, lack of oxygen, strokes or drug use episodes. Causes of insidious onset brain injuries include brain tumours, degenerative diseases (such as AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease) and drug or alcohol abuse.

The Challenges Faced

Acquired brain or head injuries affect people in different ways. Some people will experience physical symptoms, others will experience changes to their thinking and learning abilities and some will face challenges with managing their emotions and behaviour. Sometimes, an individual will have a combination of physical and emotional symptoms.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Seizures/fits
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness, shaking or stiffness of the limbs
  • Changes to sleeping pattern
  • Changes to senses, including sight, smell and touch
  • Memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty communicating
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood swings
  • Changes to personality

Every brain injury is unique, meaning each individual that has suffered an ABI should be treated with tailored care.
